I Did It Again!

...finished another good book, that is.  In the true story, Unexpected Twist, author Andy Borowitz shares life lessons learned from his colon.

This book is a very funny memoir about a very serious subject.  The author recalls how a freakish medical condition - a very serious intestinal ailment - led him to the brink of death.  Partly terrifying and otherwise hilarious, this book is an encouragement to appreciate the life we have.

As usual, when reading any new book, I keep a pen and paper handy, for I love finding new words.  Because this book deals with a medical condition, I had no trouble finding unknown words to research.

Here are some of them:

1.  Sigmoid Volvulus - a type of twisting and/or knotting in the colon.  The result is usually a serious obstruction requiring immediate treatment.  Borowitz's painful symptoms and reoccurring sh*t tsunamis have convinced me that I Do Not Want This.

2.  Ileostomy - a surgical procedure in which the small intestine is attached to the abdominal wall in order to bypass the large intestine.  Digestive waste then exits the body through an artificial opening.  Bowel obstructions are often treated with an ileostomy.

3.  Stoma - a surgical opening to the outside of the body.  It can be temporary or permanent.  Stoma comes from the Greek word for "mouth."

This book was definitely a page turner and I didn't want to put it down.  It illustrates that sometimes, for no good reason, bad things do happen to good people.  Young adults get conditions that we typically associate with the elderly.  The future can be uncertain.  There are no guarantees.

Yet, all of those negatives aside, we can still choose to live life to its fullest TODAY, no matter what our situation or health may be.  Andy Borowitz has just reaffirmed this for us.

Read this book.  You won't regret it.

  1. I'm reading Killing Lincoln, by Bill O'Reilly. Not a fan of him in particular, but the book has gotten rave reviews and my mom finished it while we were there, so... I'm usually a fan of historical fiction, but this summer I've been reading mostly Maeve Binchy (Minding Frankie, Scarlet Feather). All her books take place in Ireland and I'm really intrigued with both the country and the quirky lifestyles she writes about. That said, your latest read sounds like a good one. Maybe I can loan Bob Killing Lincoln when I'm done and I can borrow your book? Bonnie

  2. Interesting! I like different kinds of books, either medical or fantasy. This might be right up my alley.

  3. Sounds like a good read. And yes, we should make the best of today because we may never see tomorrow.
