A Different Kind of Day on the River

My son Caleb is fit.  I mean, really fit.  He has been working out for months now, getting and keeping  himself in shape in order to be ready for the Army physical and for a Tough Mudder event he is registered for in Maryland this September the 9th.  If you are not familiar with the Tough Mudder events, watch this video.  It's a crazy and challenging event that will test your physical limits:

Recently he completed his third 90-day round of the P-90X fitness workout regimen, and so he has been finding a variety of other activities to participate in while he is on his "break" week before starting it again.  If you ask me, he doesn't take much of a break.

First he went rock climbing at a local gym with some friends.  It was a new experience for him and he enjoyed the challenge.  He related how his fingers and forearms trembled from fatigue.

Next he took a long bike ride on the Union County Rails to Trails route between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg.  His round trip was about 20 miles.  I've been on some of the Rails to Trails in Pennsylvania and they are quite scenic at places - covered bridges over streams, beautiful farmland, and plenty of interesting backyard landscaping and flowers.  His report:  "My muscles felt it a bit."

Then the other day he tried another new sport that he had been talking about for a while.  He rented a paddle board for one day and took a cruise down the Susquehanna River.  He launched it about two blocks from our home, and when he called me to pick him up he had rowed down the river to a boat marina about 10 1/2 miles away!  A good workout for sure.  (And a really good sunburn, oops.)  He said the only thing that could have made the experience more enjoyable was having a friend to be paddle boarding along with him.  There weren't even any boats out during the middle of the day, so he had a fairly lonely outing.

Caleb has never been one to let much grass grow under his feet.  I wonder what will be his next "on break" adventure!

P.S.  Just found out - it's a 5K run with a local church group in another week.
