Have You Been to the Outer Banks?

If so, we are requesting your help.

Next year the husband/lover/best friend and I will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary.  Wooo-hoooo!  And yes, I've finally gotten him trained and in order.  So I think I will keep him for a while yet.

Also, in 2013 he will experience his 40th anniversary of working at the same place.  He began working the summer after his high school graduation at Chef Boyardee Foods, in Milton, Pennsylvania.  Over the years the company has changed its name, but currently it is Conagra Grocery Products. In this day and age it is a rare person that has worked at the same place that long.

So I think we should do something special to commemorate these two anniversaries, and together we have decided to travel to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's on our Bucket Lists, and neither of us has ever been there.

Now, here is where you can help us.  If you've been there, and have good advice for us as we plan our trip, please share it with us.

Specifically, we are looking for help in planning three areas:

1.  Campgrounds
Keep in mind we have a large fifth wheel, so we do not want a "tents only" campground.  Also my husband is a beginner 5th wheel parker, so we do not want an ultra tight space.

2.  Sight-seeing items not to be missed
Nature preserves, gardens, historical sites, museums, quirky places and things - we like them all.

3.  Restaurants, pubs, cafes that you would recommend
We especially like eating at unique one-of-a-kind places as opposed to chain restaurants.  You will get extra points if you recommend a good DINER.  I love them.  And, we are always game for something unique.

Here's a unique one - wonder where this is?
We plan to have about 2 weeks available once we get to the area.  Any advice or trip tidbits you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, and may the planning begin!

  1. We go there frequently, but not camping, I do know that most of the larger campgrounds are south toward Nags Head, and down toward hatteras. There is one however right there in Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills.

  4. Back over 25 years ago when we lived in Pennsylvania, we spent two weeks every summer there and a week around Thanksgiving. Back then we rented cottages or set up our RV at Oregon Inlet. Went to Roanoke Island to see the Lost Colony Play and other attractions but mostly played and fished in the surf. Have fun, it used to be a great place and I am sure it still is.
